Text suggestions Part 4 + comments by all of you

Jane Austen (to BOYS???)
Faulkner: As I lay Dying
Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep
Graham Greene (YES! He's on the list!)
Woolf: Mrs Dalloway
Great Gatsby (Fitzgerald)
Twain: Huck Finn (too difficult bla bla bla) BUT his short stories would be great to do! (diary of Adam and Eve, Devil's Race Track, The great dark, Life on the Mississippi)
Thomas Hardy
VS Naipail: Miguel Street (also good in 4th grade) & More
Kurt Vonnegut: Slaughterhouse 5 (but he got so much of Dresden wrong!), Kilgore Trout, Breakfast of Champions (visual in it)
Ian Forrester: Room with a View (especially liked by girls)
Passage to India
John Fowles (The Collector, French Lieutenant)
Hawthorne: Scarlet Letter (doable)
Hemingway: great and difficult at the same time (sparseness of language/syntax) but ideas are still accessible
HuRston: Their eyes were watching God (NB the film is awful)
Ishiguro: Never let me go! Once we were warriors
James: Europeans or Short Stories (for a guy, not too bad)
Joyce: Dubliners (perhaps) Portrait of the artist as a young man (but none of us actually really taught it...)
Kipling: Jungle Book (recommended for 4th grade :nature versus nurture etc)
Lawrence: good to read, not to teach
Mccarthy: The Road, All the Pretty Horses (they like it a lot: completely engaged (at Marnix)
McEwan: if you want to become depressed?? better: Atonement, Enduring Love
Morrison: Patrick" " I had a go..."(stereotyping put me off) Bluest Eye, Beloved (aargh difficult?say Carmen and Hanna. Marnix says YES!!!) ok some can teach this some don't.
O'Brien: The things They carried: very good!!!! + In the lake of the woods
Poe: Telltale heart: on the internet there's a great example essay on that (Andrea will give us the url)
Roth: Portnoy's Complaint (great!)
Rushdie ("I don't really know what to do with Rushdie") The ground beneath her feet
Wharton: age of innocense


Why are so few women in the PLA? (25%)
